Port Transportation Industry
Pakistan’s port transportation industry plays an important role in the country’s economic development. Pakistan has several major ports, including Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port, which are the main gateways for imports and exports of goods and services.
The economic status of Pakistan’s port transportation industry is affected by various factors, including infrastructure development, trade policies, and global economic trends. In recent years, Pakistan has made significant investments in upgrading and expanding its port facilities to improve their efficiency and competitiveness. This has helped to increase the volume of trade and cargo throughput at the ports, which has a positive impact on the country’s economic growth.
However, there are also some challenges facing the port transportation industry in Pakistan. For example, the country’s infrastructure, especially roads and railways, is not fully developed, which can limit the efficiency of port operations. Additionally, Pakistan faces trade restrictions and sanctions from some countries, which can affect the volume and types of goods transported through its ports.
The types of cranes required by the port
Ports require a variety of cranes to handle different types of cargo and operations. Here are some common types of cranes used in ports:
- Container Cranes: These are used to load and unload containers from ships. Container cranes are typically very large and have a long reach, allowing them to handle containers stacked several rows high on a ship.
- Quay Cranes: Quay cranes are mounted on the quay (dock) and are used to load and unload cargo from ships. They are typically smaller than container cranes and are used for handling general cargo, such as bulk materials or breakbulk cargo.
- Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs): RTGs are mobile cranes that can be moved around the port on rubber tyres. They are used to stack and retrieve containers in container yards. RTGs can also be used to load and unload cargo from ships if necessary.
- Ship-to-Shore Cranes: These cranes are mounted on barges or floating platforms and are used to load and unload cargo directly from ships to land or vice versa. Ship-to-shore cranes are typically used for handling large or heavy cargo that cannot be handled by other types of cranes.
- Mobile Harbour Cranes: Mobile harbour cranes are similar to RTGs but are designed for heavier lifting capacities and slower speeds. They are typically used for handling large or heavy cargo in ports and terminals.
In addition to these common types of cranes, ports may also use other specialized cranes depending on their specific needs and operations. For example, some ports may use cranes specifically designed for handling vehicles or for lifting and moving very large or awkward-shaped cargo.
About container gantry crane
There are two main types of container gantry cranes: rail type and tire type.
Advantages of rail mounted container gantry crane:
- High level of automation: The central control system adopts modern information technology, which makes scheduling and positioning more accurate, facilitating management personnel to carry out convenient and rapid container retrieval, storage and other operations, thereby improving the automation ability of container yards.
- Energy saving and consumption reduction: By replacing traditional fuel with electricity, it provides power support for the operation of the unit, greatly reducing environmental pollution, controlling user costs, improving operational efficiency, and meeting the relevant requirements of national low emission and low pollution indicators.
- High homework efficiency: In order to shorten the scope and distance of work, this type of crane is mainly rail type. During operation, the crane carries out planned loading and unloading transportation operations according to the direction and characteristics of the rail laying, which has a higher space utilization rate. It can achieve about 15 container mid span stacking operations in multiple lanes, greatly improving work efficiency.
Advantages of tire type container gantry crane:
- Advantages of simple structure, convenient operation, and high efficiency: suitable for ports, docks, warehouses, and other places. Its use can accelerate the turnover of container transport bridges or other cranes, improve the efficiency and safety of cargo transportation.
- Strong adaptability: It can meet the transportation needs of different types and sizes of goods, and is therefore widely used in the logistics industry.

Russian port operator purchases seven new cranes
Two 124t LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes for container handling are included in the order along with a 40t electric full-revolving gantry crane and four electric gantry jib cranes, one with a 100t lifting capacity and with 63t capacities.
The mobile harbour cranes will replace existing Gottwald cranes working at Broad Pier number one.
At Novorossiysk’s eastern pier the 40t gantry crane, will be at work unloading iron, iron ore, iron ore concentrate and ferrous metals. One of the 63-tonners will start work alongside the 40t crane two months later, while at the East Pier’s berth 5 the largest crane will be in operation by October 2013.
The other two cranes will work Broad Pier number two and West Pier berths five and six from June and August 2013 respectively, unloading similar cargo to the East Pier cranes but with the Broad Pier number two crane also handling pig iron, steel sheets and steel coils.
